| At 12:44 am on Feburary 14, my sister gave birth to her first child, Ella Kaljaste, named for her father's grandmother. She's 5 lbs 4 ounces and both mother and baby are doing fine. Ella herself is beautiful, and I will fight anyone who says otherwise. Pictures are forthcoming.

| So, I get the following emailed to me from my mom the other day:
Raveena
Aulakh The Hamilton Spectator Police
are investigating the drowning of a three-year-old girl in Stoney Creek Saturday
evening. Emergency crews were called when the girl was found floating in the
swimming pool in her Green Mountain Road East home at about 7:30 p.m. She was
rushed to the Henderson General Hospital where doctors pronounced her
dead. “We were there within 10 minutes,” said acting Staff Sgt. Chris Wills
of the east-end police station. “We tried to revive but couldn’t.” Police
said the girl was spotted floating by someone at the house. “The girl’s
parents were at the house and so were some others... and some kids,” said
Wills. He didn’t know exactly how many people were there when the police
arrived but said “there were a bunch (of people).” Wills also said he didn’t
know if there were other kids in the pool at the time when the police
arrived. “We’re investigating,” he said. “We will have more information
once we’ve spoken to her parents,” said Wills. Hamilton police’s major crime
unit is investigating the drowning. Wills said detectives “were talking to
the girl’s parents and some others.” Staff Sgt. Steve Hrab is the lead
investigator in the case. Police are yet to release the name of the
three-year-old girl.
This may seem like a random article to email me, but after a quick phone call I learn that the child in question is, in fact, my cousin's daughter, Paris. Now, don't bother with giving me your sympathies, as I didn't even know the child existed, except in a vague remembering that Nicole(her mother) was pregnant.
You see, Nicole, and her father (my mom's brother) belong to a branch of the family we have little to do with, interacting only at weddings and funerals, of which there hasn't been any in 8 years, give or take. In fact, I probably wouldn't recognize these outcast branch if I saw them. The reason for the shunning is this: they are the progeny of one of my mom's two brothers, Glenn and Roy (I can never remember which), both of whom are heavily involved in drugs, have criminal records and have passed this tendency unto their spawn. AND to make matters worse, family gossip has it that the child drowned during a party, featuring various intoxicants.
Keeping all this in mind, I've decided to not attend the visitation and/or funeral. Neither has Katie, for other reasons. My mom seems to think this isn't a very good idea, as all the rest of the cousins will be attending, even Edward the Satanist. So, the question is: Does this make me a bad person?
